New mp3s: Daytrotter Session

Filed under: mobius band news — peter @ 11:46 am

On our last tour we were introduced to the wonderful Quad Cities of Illinois and Iowa. One brisk morning in late October we woke up in our customary Super 8 and headed across the border into Rock Island, a town with a name awesome enough to host Daytrotter. Here’s a pic Ben took, a little Rock Island flavor for y’all:

Rock Island

Daytrotter records 2 or 3 bands every day, writes up the band, and posts the songs for free. It’s pretty amazing.

Check out our session and download the 4 free mp3s.

But it wasn’t all smooth sailing that fateful day.

Once we got everything all wired up, I went to leave the live room and tripped over a cord that was attached to Ben’s priceless 1965 Gibson something-er-other model guitar. It crashed to the ground front first and the neck split diagonally almost into 2 pieces at the headstock. We stood in stunned, panicked silence for a few minutes. What a nightmare.

Pat, the engineer there, ended up recommending a luthier, and actually lent us a guitar until we could come back and pick up Ben’s. (A chore which was ultimately performed by our dear, loyal, batshit-crazy friends Tigercity.) In short, they took care of us like family.

But you don’t need my endorsement of their character over there to enjoy the site, it has a gigantic amount of free, unique recordings. They record everything completely live in the studio with no overdubs, which is really out of the ordinary, not to mention a logistical pain in the ass for a band like us with 7000 sounds going on in every song. But they nailed it, and dare I say, so did we. Check especially the pulled-out-of-ass version of The Loving Sounds of Static.
