Atlanta Show, Athens Memories

Filed under: other people's music, tour — peter @ 11:32 am

Last night in Atlanta was a blast. JJ, our new best friend, responded to Ben’s request for spicy Hot V8 by bringing what looked like a gallon jug of the stuff. We played for a great group of very spirited folks. Off to Athens today to hang with friends on a day off before heading down to Florida.

And what better time to drop a little shout out to Cinemechanica.

See, on our very first tour, booked by yours truly, this is in like 2002 probably, we had 4 days off in Athens. We met Cinemechanica in the famed Caledonia lounge. They didn’t play so we didn’t yet know the musical assault we would come to know so well, but they did offer to put us up.

We drove out to their house in rural Georgia and it was like we’d discovered our southern twins: Just like us, they lived in a house together outside of a college town and were spending all their time woodshedding the band and working on their home studio.

We ended up staying with them all 4 nights, their hospitality was insane. We recorded a song there I believe. I should post that, but I don’t think I have it on me.

They also played for us. By the time that happened we had gotten to know them as pretty easy going guys. I would have guessed some mellow indie songcraft. Instead they raised a riot of mindfucking math rock, more complicated and well executed than any Don Cabellero I’d heard, but with actual human-style songwriting holding it all together.

Anyway, Cinemechanica. They’re still doing it, the last time I saw them we ended up on a bill together in Missoula, just by chance, and their set was of course better than ever.
